The key to Mrs Obama's style is its mix-and-match, high-and-low approach.
Modern fashionistas combine high-street; young and/or cult designers; old established luxury brands; AND vintage – for Christmas last year Mrs Obama earned more fashion applause by wearing a vintage 1950s dress by American designer Norman Norelli. Plus our generation of working women shops online for convenience; something Mrs Obama has often admitted to doing.
She is also unafraid of colour or bold patterns: no dour power suits in greys, black, navy or neutral shades for her. Instead she goes for scarlet, chartreuse, peacock blue, melon pink. Unconfirmed rumours swirled in fashion circles last December, speculating that Mrs Obama's unofficial stylist was White House aide, Meredith Koop, replacing Ikram Goldman, the Chicago boutique owner thought to have been responsible for the First Lady's wardrobe. Whoever is behind her style, Mrs Obama isn't telling; but those in the fashion world are all watching.
